MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Some Horry County schools are taking part in a program that allows people in the community to teach students skills that they need for their futures.

The Adopt-A-Teacher program gives business leaders and others the option to sign up for the program, in which they explain to students why they need to learn certain skills.

Kimberly Rougeux is a teacher at Myrtle Beach Intermediate School and also spearheads the program.

She said, "With a new covey leadership model that we are doing here at our school we really want to get to involve the community more, to get them more involved in the schools too so they are going to bring their expertise into the classrooms so they are going to learn from people who this connects with things in the classroom and their lives."

An example would be an orthodontist talking about how using measurements helps with applying braces.

Stephanie French works as the marketing coordinator for Sonic restaurants and is part of the program too.

She said math is a must in her field and she wants to explain that to students.

French explained, "We have over 300,000 drink combinations so we can go in and talk about probability and we can talk about weights and measurements and how to weigh those and talk about team building and working as a team."

So she plans on dedicating hours of her time during the school year to teach the kids valuable lessons and have them create a commercial as their special project.

The program also aims to help the teachers financially because volunteers not only give their time, but they can offer to give a donation to the school.
