‘We are devastated’: Loved ones remember family of three killed in Murrells Inlet crash

Relatives of a family of three killed in a crash in the South Strand are mourning their loss while also using the tragedy to bring awareness to driving dangers.

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) - Loved ones are picking up the pieces after a tragic crash took the lives of a family of three, including a six-year-old girl.

The Horry County coroner identified the family as 26-year-old Jean Carlos Porfino de Aquino, 30-year-old Kamyla Lucas de Aquino, and 6-year-old Maria Eduarda Lucas De Souza.

On Monday, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the family’s Kia four-door was hit as they crossed Highway 17 Bypass at Wood Thrush Drive.

WMBF News spoke with the family’s loved ones for the first time, who are now left to pick up the pieces after this heartbreaking loss.

“They used the car as a weapon. They took a family away from us. If you saw the wreckage, you would be just as angry as we are,” said cousin Marcos.

Marcos also shared a video of the crash’s aftermath and he said he wanted others to said they want others to know how devastating the crash was.

The coroner’s officers also said the family had recently moved to Myrtle Beach from Massachusetts.

Marcos is now honoring his loved ones and describes them as a light in this world. He also said that Kamyla was several months pregnant at the time of the crash.

“When they found out Kamyla was expecting, they were overjoyed. They were looking forward to this new chapter,” said Marcos.

He is now working to fight for someone to be charged and held responsible for this unthinkable tragedy.

“I want the community to be just as angry as we are because that could happen to anyone in the community,” said Marcos.

WMBF News is working to learn if those responsible will face charges in the crash.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with medical costs.

The father of 6-year-old Maria Eduarda Lucas De Souza told WMBF News he is now in the Grand Strand making arrangements.
