MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – It's a snake! It's an eel! It's … neither of those things.

A video taken over the Labor Day weekend shows what, at first glance, appears to be a large sea creature coming very close to the shore near 25th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach.

That video was shared across social media, with many claiming it was a large eel or sea snake.

Myrtle Beach Police Cpl. Thomas Vest said what the video actually shows is a 16- to 20-foot log that was floating in the ocean.

According to Vest, beach crews who responded were able to pull the log on shore and cut it up to remove it from the surf.

Vest stressed it was not any form of sea life.

A lifeguard with John's Beach Service said he watched as the log was cut up.
