HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - If you still need to get your child's school supplies and clothes, there may be no better time than this weekend. The South Carolina sales tax holiday weekend can help save you some big cash. The three day, tax free sales begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, August 5.
South Carolina has a 6 percent state sales tax. Many of the items on your child's back-to-school list are exempt from the sales tax, along with any other local sales tax - this means clothing, school supplies, backpacks to computers.
Shoppers will also find tax free items for the home and the dorm room. If you're a parent of a college student or maybe going to be a college student, now is a great time to check things off the list this weekend. Some stores will also have extended hours, so make sure you check with them before to get a few extra hours to score on those deals.
General manager of JCPenney at Coastal Grand Mall, Mary Hughey, said stores get so busy during this time of year they compare it to Christmas shopping, so pack some patience.
"I think people just to be aware that the stores are going to be busy, there will be lines. But we've done a really good job of making sure that we've got the areas staffed, and we have mobile devices that if we need to, we can set those up and check out as well. So, you know, just have fun," said Hughey.
Not only do shoppers in South Carolina save on the state's 6 percent sales tax, but many stores also have additional deals for back-to-school. In past years, South Carolina shoppers have saved between $2 and $3 million during the holiday weekend.
However, it doesn't apply to anything rented. Therefore, if you're ordering something, it must be delivered and paid for during this weekend. Items such as jewelry, cosmetics, furniture, and eye wear are not tax exempt.
However, you can still save some cash at certain locations. JCPenney has deals for children's eyeglasses that last through the end of September. Your kids can also get haircuts for $10 at JCPenney salons through September 15.
