SCHP: 18-wheeler fire snarls traffic on I-20 at Florence County line
FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - An 18-wheeler on fire in Florence County, right at the Darlington County line, snarled traffic on I-20 eastbound lanes just before the I-95 interchange Thursday morning, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper Sonny Collins.
Collins tweeted at 6:30 a.m.that traffic was moving slowly around the scene, and drivers should expect delays for several hours.
Anthony Fox with the West Florence Fire Department said firefighters arrived on scene to find the 18-wheeler carrying recycled goods in flames. Firefighters from the city of Florence and Darlington County were also dispatched for additional manpower. Crews were able to control the bulk of the fire within 10 minutes, but were still fighting fire in the trailer as of 7 a.m.
The driver of the 18-wheeler called 911 when he said he smelled burning while driving east on I-20, Fox said. By the time firefighters got scene, the truck was already on fire. Fox added that about 150 gallons of gasoline was also spilled.
One eastbound lane of I-20 was reopened as of 8:45 a.m.
Firefighters are expected to be on scene for several more hours.
