New school year, new changes to North Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Get ready parents, the clock is ticking and back to school for Horry County is just days away. Some schools have their normal preparations, but for other schools, there are big changes to where certain grades will actually attend class.

Schools had just a few months to adapt to the change in attendance line. Now that North Myrtle Beach Primary School, Elementary and Intermediate Schools have been converted to grades child development through 5th, kids will walk into big changes.

Ocean Drive Elementary school principal said preparations have been in place since the end of the school year, in May.

"I think they've been 24/7. If it wasn't their minds spending, they were here working to get their rooms ready. They're doing an awesome job, they're starting to come together, you don't see boxes all over anymore," said Principal Renea Fowler."

If you've recently walked in Ocean Drive Elementary, that's exactly what you would see - boxes, books and workers - making sure everything is ready for school to start this week. The principal said a couple of technical things still have to be done, but it won't be anything that would stop the day.

Since preparations really began as soon as school ended in May, she's happy things are really coming along.

A challenge for some this year may be getting used to having several grade levels under one roof, but the school is excited because it means they can follow their students up the line.

For students, this new "facelift" means walking into a fresh new look. A look, you can check out at an open house, tonight. One will be held at each of the three North Myrtle Beach elementary schools.

"It will just be for parents to come in, meet their teachers, know where their rooms are. A lot of people have come to this school so but the rooms are changed," said Fowler.

The principal of one of those schools, said this will also change traffic patterns at Ocean Drive Elementary. The school will have about a dozen buses instead of nearly 20.

The bonus, the school expects your kids will get home from all the North Myrtle Beach elementary schools, faster. You can expect your kids home by 3:15 - 3:20 p.m. That knocks off about a half hour from last year.

She said you can help prepare your kids in the next few days she said believe it or not, getting them back on their sleep schedule and morning routine.
