(RMS TITANIC/CNN) - One hundred and two years ago Tuesday the Titanic sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
The ship set sail on its maiden voyage on April 10 from Southampton, England heading to New York.
But on April 14, just before midnight, the luxury liner hit an iceberg in the north Atlantic.
The ship sank in less than three hours.
About 2,200 passengers and crew were on board.
Approximately 1,500 died in the disaster.
The wreckage is located about 350 miles off the southeast coast of Newfoundland.
