2 men charged with arson, false insurance claim for 2013 house fire

HARTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) – Two Hartsville men have been charged in connection with arson and making a false insurance claim in connection with a January 2013 house fire.

Matthew Eric Key, 29, and Curtis Atkinson, 80, have been charged with arson - third degree, criminal conspiracy, and making a false insurance claim to obtain benefits for fire or explosion loss, according to a news release from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

The fire took place on Robinson View Drive on January 18, 2013. According to the SLED arrest warrants, investigators used a confidential informant who obtained information from the suspects in which they admitted to aspects of the crime.

Key and Atkinson were booked at the Darlington County Detention Center, and each face up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.
