MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Someone stole 12 Christmas cards from a home mail box on 48th Avenue North Monday, according to a Myrtle Beach police report.

The victim said he put the mail in the box, then a short time later witnessed a white male pull up in a blue truck and steal it. He tried to follow the man but lost him.

"You always have robbers and people who want to steal; they think that there's money in mail," said Tom Yackania, a postman who has been delivering mail for more than 30 years. Yackania said thieves can be clever, and he's been followed while delivering mail.

"If someone is tailgating you, they are following you along; they are watching you deliver mail, and they look suspicious," he said.

Fortunately for the victim, there was no money in the cards, but Yackania says you need to take precautions with your mail this time of year.

Experts say it's best to go directly to the post office to send your mail. If you can't get to the post office, then don't put your mail out until the latest time possible before it's picked up. Have packages delivered to locations where you know you will be, like your job or to the neighbors.
