Myrtle Beach Seahawks win state title, defeat Daniel High

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The Myrtle Beach High School Seahawks are the Class AAA State Champions!

The Seahawks challenged Daniel High School for the state title in a game that kicked off at 3 p.m. Saturday.

An early turnover lead to the Seahawks first points in the game, going up 7-0 in the first quarter. They went to the half tied 7-7, and then 14-14 at the end of the third quarter.

With seven minutes left in the game, Myrtle Beach's Graham Vaughn captured their third touchdown, and the Seahawks took the lead 21-14.

At the four minute mark, Daniel High's Austin Barnes ran the ball for a five yard touchdown run.

With one second left, and the ball on the six-yard line, Sean Huggins attempted the title winning field goal.

And it was good! Myrtle Beach won 24-21.

The Seahawks got a grand sendoff when they left for Columbia. When they departed Friday morning, the student body, parents, staff and coaches came out to celebrate and cheer them on in a sendoff parade.

The Seahawks have been dubbed the underdogs throughout the playoffs this season.

After a rough start to the season, the Seahawks pulled away with a 10-4 record. Head Coach Mickey Wilson says their underdog status won't hinder them.

He has long said this is the youngest group of Seahawks that has collectively been on the field for Myrtle Beach in a season. But the maturing process was quick, and has led the squad to the state title game.
