COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - The Myrtle Beach Seahawks took down top-ranked Daniel on a last-second field goal to win the SCHSL 3A state championship on Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium.
An early turnover recovery by Myrtle Beach led to the first points of the game as Drayton Arnold found Graham Vaughn for a touchdown to make it 7-0. An Arnold interception was run back by the Lions for a touchdown, and the two teams went to the half tied at seven apiece.
After giving up a quick touchdown run in the third, Myrtle Beach answered back. Arnold threw a second touchdown pass, this time to C.J. Finkley, to tie the game up.
Then in the fourth quarter, the Seahawks took the lead with time winding down. Arnold hit Vaughn for a second time in the endzone to make it 21-14. Daniel answered back and with less than two minutes to play tied the game at 21-21 after an Austin Barnes touchdown run.
Myrtle Beach came back, and converted twice on third downs to get down inside Daniel's ten yard line. After letting the clock tick down to one second left, head coach Mickey Wilson sent out the field goal unit, and junior Sean Huggins connected from 22 yards out as time expired for a Myrtle Beach victory.
Daniel (14-1) was previously the number one ranked team in the state. Myrtle Beach (11-4) began the year with a 1-3 start, but ended with 11 wins. Their last loss of the season came on October 11th, before rattling off eight straight wins to end the year.
Mickey Wilson wins his second state title as head coach of the Seahawks (2010), and Myrtle Beach wins its third state crown since 2008.
