CAROLINA FOREST, SC (WMBF) - Soon, area drivers are going to see construction work happening on Highway 501.  SCDOT engineers are meeting with contractors Wednesday to talk about the final construction schedule for the project. They'll plan out when workers will be out on the roadway, and how they'll handle all the traffic passing through.

SCDOT representatives say this is the final step before work is expected to begin later this month. The plans for the multi-million dollar project call for an extra lane to be added on the northbound section of Highway 501 from Tanger Outlets to Gardner Lacy road. Carolina Forest drivers are relieved to see this project hit the road, but some wonder if it'll be enough.

"I'm glad that it's done," said Dennis DiSabato with the Carolina Forest Civic Association. "We've seen some changes in the traffic patterns over there, which helped a little bit at that intersection, but there's a lot of work that needs to be done as far as infrastructure out there. Commuters are frustrated every single day in Carolina Forest."

The Preconstruction Conference meeting starts at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning. SCDOT engineers tell WMBF News later Wednesday there will be more specific details of when construction work will begin. But drivers should get ready - there will be lane closures, so the widening project will have major affects on drivers on Highway 501.
