HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - South Carolina Highway patrol officers are investigating a head-on collision that fatally wounded both drivers.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick says Michael Lee Baker, 39, from Conway was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause-of-death was blunt force trauma from the crash.

Shane Michael Carter-Ward, 21, from Conway, was pronounced dead at Conway Medical Center in the emergency room, also from blunt force trauma caused by the crash.

Horry County Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to the accident along Oak Log Lake Road just after midnight. Cpl. Sonny Collins with the SCDPS said Baker, the driver of a Lexus was traveling South on Hwy 905, not wearing a seatbelt when he crossed the center-line and struck a Chrysler, driven by Carter-Ward, who was driving North, head-on.

Both lanes of traffic on Highway 905 were closed for a portion of time as crews responded. Lanes have since been opened back up.

The accident is being investigated by the SCDPS.
