Thieves pose as power company employees

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Santee Cooper is warning customers in Horry County of possible thieves posing as Santee Cooper employees who are entering businesses and demanding immediate payment of bills.

According to a news release from the Santee Cooper power company, the scam is currently being operated in the Horry County area, and is especially targeting restaurants and other small businesses. Business owners have also been contacted by phone asking for credit card payments or wire transfers.

Santee Cooper employees will have an identification badge and be in uniform if visiting a business to discuss payment information, and these visits will not happen after business hours, representatives stated.

If a business owner wants to verify that someone is a Santee Cooper employee, they can call 843-347-3399 in Horry or Georgetown counties or 843-761-8000 in Berkeley County.

Santee Cooper advises that customers should never provide a social security number, credit card number, or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone, online, or in person, unless the customer initiated the contact and are confident they are speaking to the right person.
