Family returns to SC 4 years after Brittanee Drexel's disappearance
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - It's been four years since Brittanee Drexel walked out of her Grand Strand hotel and into obscurity.
New York teen Brittanee Drexel was last seen on April 25, 2009 while on spring break.
Brittanee Drexel told her mom she was headed no more than 20 miles away from her New York home to Charlotte Beach in Rochester, giving no indication she would be hitting the road for South Carolina.
Her boyfriend at the time, John Grieco, called her mother Dawn that day to say they were in Myrtle Beach and they couldn't find her daughter.
A little over an hour after Brittanee's last text message, investigators say her cell phone was pinging from a tower along the border of Georgetown and Charleston County.
Since then, police have searched various location along the Grand Strand, including a motel room in Georgetown, with no luck.
Now four years later, without any signs to her location or new clues about her disappearance, her family returns to the Grand Strand area to honor the anniversary and celebrate her life.
Dawn Drexel says she feels the closest to Brittanee here in Myrtle Beach, especially near the tree they planted in Brittanee's honor. While it is not the last place Drexel was seen, it is a place for her family to gather and remember her.
Thursday, they planted flowers called Forget-Me-Nots around her tree. Dawn is determined not to forget.
She met with investigators today to get an update on her daughter's disappearance.
They still consider Drexel's disappearance to be an open case but are still searching for the last link of information.
Dawn Drexel pleads with the public to come forward with information.
"I know someone knows something. I just need them to come forward so we can get some sort of resolution, where Brittanee is, to get a break in her case," expressed Dawn Drexel.
