Carolina Forest Fire shows value of renters insurance
CAROLINA FOREST, SC (WMBF) - Everyone who lived in Windsor Green is trying to take inventory of what they lost in the fire.
But for those who were renting and didn't have renters insurance, they are dealing with the burden of replacing everything they owned, at their own expense. This has many people talking about the value of renters insurance.
There are plenty of misconceptions that keep folks from getting renters insurance, so WMBF News decided to check with local agents to see how it can benefit you. Many people think it's pricey, but local agents tell us it actually can be very affordable.
Some people are able to get a policy for as little as 100 bucks a year. The steps to receive payment are similar to the ones you follow when you file other types of claims like for your car.
Another reason is because some people think they don't own enough things with a high value. But in a moment where you lose it all, you start to realize everything in your home matters.
"It's the little stuff that gets to you," said local insurance agent Amanda Vibbert."Your clothes. Your pots and pans. The linens. Accessories and stuff like that adds up really really quickly. And you have to think, do I have the money to replace it?"
Many management companies are starting to require renters insurance because of how important it can be in situations like the Carolina Forest Fire, which burned 26 housing buildings. Agents say if you are considering getting a policy, make sure you fully understand what the policy covers. Most agents recommend up to $20,000 as the minimum coverage.
