HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) After weeks of highly contested and heated campaigns, and even more controversial primaries, voters have chosen their nominees for the 7th Congressional District.

Gaining the majority of the votes from their respective parties, the AP is reporting that Horry County Council Chairman Tom Rice is the Republican nominee to face Democratic nominee Dr. Gloria Bromell Tinubu on the ballot in November for the 7th Congressional District seat.

Tom Rice was running against former Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer in the run-off election, a field narrowed from nine candidates in the primary.

Their campaigns produced what some might consider negative television ads in the two weeks between the primary and run-off elections, a hot topic the two candidates dished out about on WMBF News this Week with Anchor Michael Maely. You can get a full recap on

Democratic nominee Dr. Gloria Bromell Tinubu was given the nomination by the SC Election Commission after the primary election, but forced into the run-off with Preston Brittain after an Horry County judge decided votes cast for former candidate Ted Vick should be counted.

With the run-off election behind her, Tinubu says she will focus on the message she hopes to convey to voters.

"We want to talk about having an excellent system of public education from pre-kindergarten to college, we want to make sure that people have access to affordable health care and that we have the kind of infrastructure that we need for economic development and growth," Tinubu said.

During his concession speech to supporters Tuesday night, Brittain said he will support Tinubu, and encouraged voters to do the same.

"We all need to come together as democrats and support [Tinubu] going forward," Brittain said.  "This is about Gloria tonight, and we're proud of her and what she's accomplished."

Rice and Tinubu will face on November 6 to be the first representative in Congress from the 7th Congressional District.
