MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) A motorcyclist from Virginia is behind bars facing felony DUI charges for an accident along Mr. Joe White Avenue in Myrtle Beach over the weekend.

An incident report from Myrtle Beach Police says 45-year-old Kenneth Tarpey of Gloucester, VA was driving a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle east along Mr. Joe White Avenue in Myrtle Beach Sunday morning when the bike struck a curb and landed in a small field near Dunbar Street.

A witness saw this series of events and reported to responding police what happened.

Police found Tarpey lying under the bike in the field with lacerations to his face and head. The female passenger had landed more than 15 feet away from Tarpey and was unconscious. She had no visible injuries, according to the report, but she would not respond.

The report says Tarpey's speech was slurred and he had difficulty standing without falling.

When EMS arrived on scene to begin treatment of the passenger, police began their investigation into the accident, performing test on Tarpey's physical state.

According to the report, Tarpey filed three tests, concluding that he had been driving under the influence. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Myrtle Beach Jail

An officer responded to the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center to inquire about the female victim's injuries, at which time Tarpey's charge was elevated to felony DUI. That officer was informed that the victim's injuries were serious.

Booking records at J. Reuben Long Detention Center show bond for Tarpey has been set at $30,000 and he remains in custody Monday afternoon.
