MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) A motorcyclist has died after a collision on Highway 544 Saturday afternoon.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to an accident involving a motorcycle on Highway 544 three miles east of Myrtle Beach that occurred around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Lance Corporal Judd Jones said the Honda motorcycle and 2011 Chevrolet involved were both traveling west along that highway when the bike changed lanes, striking the Chevrolet.
The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike. From the scene he was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center were he later died from his injuries, Jones said.
Horry County Coroner Robert Edge has identified the driver as 57-year-old Mitchell Lewellen of Mullins. Lewellen died in the hospital shortly before 9 p.m.
The driver and passenger and the Chevrolet were both wearing seatbelts, and reportedly unharmed.
Jones said this accident remains under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol's MAIT team.
