NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) The South Carolina Forestry Commission has awarded a matching grant of $3,500 to the North Myrtle Beach Fire and Rescue Division to purchase equipment and supplies for wildland firefighting efforts.
The Fire/Rescue Division for the City of North Myrtle Beach currently employs five red card certified firefighters that are eligible for deployment to any US wildfire with the South Carolina Forestry Commission, according to North Myrtle Beach Fire Chief Tom Barstow.
"North Myrtle Beach was the first South Carolina city to undertake the South Carolina Forestry Commission's wildland firefighting training," Barstow said. "This is a role usually reserved for counties that include large tracts of undeveloped or wooded land. However, our city borders large areas of undeveloped land to the west, and adding this firefighting capability to our professional services benefits everyone."
