CONWAY, SC (WMBF) The Conway Fire Department will be receiving a ladder truck to aid in the need for new fire equipment throughout the city.

The used truck was approved during a City Council meeting Monday night and will need to go through a refurbishment program before it can be used.

According to Fire Chief Ricky Baker, the department will have the truck sometime in April of 2012.

"It's better than what we have and right now at the current time it's the best that we can do with the restrictions that we have going on budgetary and otherwise," said Baker.

Most fire apparatus needs to be replaced every 10 to 20 years. Baker said the department repeatedly had to repair its trucks beginning earlier in the year, thus the need for the new truck.

In March, several city workers were laid off to help fund new fire and police equipment. City Administrator Bill Graham said those layoffs did help free up the money for the new equipment.

The total cost of the truck and refurbishment is about $340,000.

Many Conway residents believe the truck will help them feel more confident in the fire department.

"I believe it would be a good thing because we all in the City of Conway want to know that we have up to date equipment, and if they feel like it's essential then I'm all for it," said Sherry Joyner.

Baker said the department is expected to replace smaller equipment over the next few months.
