Mayor Rhodes heads to China to boost city's growth
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes is headed to Xiamen, China Thursday morning. He will be attending the China International Fair for Investment and Trade to help with the city's economic growth. This is the second biggest expo in China.
Almost 200 countries will be attending the international fair, and this is the 15th year for the event. Why go all the way to China? Well the mayor says the city has to start looking at other investors because of the current economic state of the United States. He's looking to seek out international investors that are willing to take a chance on Myrtle Beach.
"We are a progressive city. We are a progressive community," claims Rhodes. "And we're going to seek out every opportunity that's there for us to increase business and to improve our community."
No taxpayer money will be spent on this trip, it is paid for by Keller Williams Realty. The estimated cost for the mayor's international travel is $4,500.
This move actually seems to be a growing trend, as the mayor of Charlotte also announced plans to visit China. He will be there in November.
