Car strikes, kills man walking in road

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - An Effingham man is dead after being struck by a car early Sunday morning.

According to Investigator Keith Lutcken with the Florence County Coroner's Office, 47-year-old Bennie Daniels Jr. of Effingham was struck at approximately 3 a.m. Sunday while walking along Alligator Road.

Lutcken said Daniels was a Black male wearing dark clothing and was in the direct path of traffic.  He died on the scene as a result of the collision.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident occurred 2 tenths of a mile south of the city of Florence.  The driver, a 23-year-old male from Florence was traveling west in a 4-door Kia and was not injured in the collision.  He was wearing a seat belt.

An attempt was made to avoid Daniels.  Speed was reported to not be a factor.  The driver has no charges filed against him.
