HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) A portion of Highway 544 has been reopened after shutting down Thursday afternoon as troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol investigate an accident.

Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins, spokesman for the South Carolina Highway Patrol, said both sides of Highway 544 in the area of Carolina Lakes Boulvevard were closed after the accident.

According to the agency's website, the accident occurred at 2:30 p.m. and involves injuries.

Officials on scene told WMBF News Reporter Mark Meredith the accident occurred when a truck occupied by one man crashed into some trees just short of the entrance to Carolina Lakes Boulevard.

It took crews with Horry County Fire Rescue 45 minutes to get the victim out of his truck.

A medical helicopter began to land at the scene around 3:30 p.m. in the area and it took some time for the pilot to find a suitable place to land.

The victim has been airlifted, but units are unsure at this time where he is being taken for treatment. His condition is unknown.

Because of the heat, additional crews from Horry County Fire Rescue as well as the Conway Fire Department have been dispatched to assist.

Additionally, Mark said troopers were rerouting traffic and a five block area of Highway 544 was closed.

Officials with SCHP said Highway 544 reopened around 5:30 p.m.

Further details surrounding the accident are unknown at this time. WMBF News will provide those details as they become available.
