HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) The South Carolina Highway Patrol has issued a county by county breakdown of highway fatalities from January 1 through July 31 for the past four years.
The number of highway fatalities in South Carolina since the beginning of the year have increased three percent since last year, with a total of 462 in 2011. Of those fatalities, Horry County accidents account for 28, tying Horry County for third in the total number of vehicle deaths with Lexington County. Charleston County came in first with 32 fatalities and Greenville County in second with 31 fatalities.
The total number of fatalities did increase over last year, but Horry County saw a major decrease over past years. The average of fatalities in 2008 and 2009 was 32. The total number of vehicle deaths in South Carolina between 2008 and 2009 was 544.
