MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) Employees with Hyatt Buick GMC were shocked to find several cars on their lot with smashed windows and wheels missing Saturday morning.
Authorities say thieves came to the dealership in the middle of the night, broke car windows, and removed the lug nuts on two sets of wheels, making off with both the wheels and the tires. Two cars were on cinder blocks, and one more had the lug nuts removed, but the wheels were still there.
"Whoever did this had some knowledge of these vehicles," says Hyatt general manager Pat Fire. "I'd say this was a relatively professional job."
Tire and wheel theft isn't isolated to just the dealer lot. It can happen in your backyard, and that's why auto experts recommend that car owners take certain precautions to protect their investment.
"There are twenty locking lug nuts here," says Advance Auto Parts manager Matt Dillenger, as he points to a set of locking lug nuts. "For fifteen to forty dollars, you get to keep your rims safe."
As for the folks at Hyatt, they're already taking steps to increase security on the lot, and are offering a reward for any information that leads to the arrest of the wheel thieves. Anyone with information can call 843-448-4426.
