MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The 18-year-old woman killed while riding a bicycle Thursday afternoon along Kings Highway has been identified Friday morning.

Capt. David Knipes, spokesman for the Myrtle Beach Police Department, said officers were dispatched to the area of 16th Avenue North and Kings Highway in reference to an accident involving a bicycle.

According to Knipes, two people on a bicycle were traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Kings Highway when a van attempting to turn left onto Kings Highway from 16th Avenue North struck the bicycle.

The traffic light was green as the van moved to make that left turn.

Around 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Knipes confirmed a woman died as a result of the accident. She was said to be a foreign exchange student from Russia at the time.

Horry County Chief Coroner Robert Edge has identified the victim as Anastasi Teslia, 18 of Ukraine.

Teslia was living in Myrtle Beach at the time of the accident. Edge said her body will be sent home to her family in Ukraine.

As officers investigated the accident, Kings Highway from 17th Avenue North to 16th Avenue North was closed. The roadway reopened around 3:30 p.m. when the accident was cleared.

Initial reports indicated there were two bicyclists, however, Knipes said it now appears two people were riding on the same single seat bicycle. The male on the bicycle was taken to the hospital for what appears to be minor injuries.

The driver of the van will not be charged in the incident.
