Fire rips through Garden City condo

Garden City, SC - GARDEN CITY, SC (WMBF) - Multiple agencies responded Sunday morning to the scene of a 3-alarm fire at Whispering Sands Condos at 627 North Waccamaw Drive in Garden City.

WMBF News was the only news crew on scene as firefighters fought the blaze. No one was hurt in the incident.

A man told WMBF News the dog he was looking after, Harley, woke him up and alerted him to the raging fire coming from the unit above him. That man and other witnesses are calling the dog a hero and attributing it with getting all the people out safely.

Gerald Baxter owns a few units in the building and he said when he arrived at the scene the first thing he thought about were the people inside.

"We started counting people and saying who's here, who's here and everybody was accounted for so we felt pretty good that nobody was in the building. Of course the firemen were going around banging on doors too," said Baxter.

Three families were displaced by the fire and are being housed temporarily in other units at Whispering Sands. The American Red Cross is helping those residents.

"We've assisted three families here today. Met their emergency needs, given them what they needed to get them off and running again with some food and some clothing," said volunteer Judy Delsignore.

The fire was mainly contained to the top two floors of building "C" of Whispering Sands Condos, which is managed by Surfside Reality.

Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Rescue was the lead agency on scene and according to a representative, the building was approximately 50 percent damaged.

Witnesses say they think the building will be a complete loss, but they won't know until the insurance company takes a look at the damage.

Surfside Beach Fire, Midway Fire Rescue and Horry County Fire Rescue assisted in extinguishing the fire and assuring no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
