Murrells Inlet woman pleads guilty to trafficking fake handbags
Murrells Inlet, SC - COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - Designer handbags like Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Prada cost quite the pretty penny, but now one Murrells Inlet woman is in trouble with the law for trafficking imitations online.
Teresa Ann Kaufman, 32, of Murrells Inlet, pleaded guilty Thursday in a Florence federal courtroom to trafficking counterfeit handbags on Level21Inc.com and Replicablue.com.
Evidence presented at the plea hearing revealed Kaufman was involved in operating a website out of Myrtle Beach that sold counterfeit handbags. Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Chanel, Dooney & Bourke, Prada and Gucci were among the designers targeted on the site.
Investigators alleged a number of the items were described as replicas on the web, with all priced below the retail price of the designer bags.
Kaufman now faces a $2 million fine and up to 10 years in jail.
