LAKE CITY, SC (WMBF) – With family, coaches and friends looking on, Lake City High School's Shonquez Nelson signed a National Letter of Intent Tuesday to play football next season at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC.
Nelson racked up 138 tackles including 26 solo tackles, six sacks and 31 tackles for loss to lead Lake City to an 11-2 record. He played on the defensive line and linebacker as well as on the offensive line for the Panthers.
"Shonquez is a coach's dream," Lake City head coach Justin Gentry said. "He is a leader on and off the field and brings an 'old school' mentality to the playing field. He is just a hardnosed player that enjoys playing the game the right way."
Saint Augustine's, which competes in NCAA Division II in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, recruited Nelson as a defensive player. Nelson said he expects to play linebacker and possibly special teams for the Falcons.
Nelson said he feels St. Augustine's is a perfect fit him.
"This is a great opportunity for me to get a liberal arts education and the chance to play football right away," he said after signing his Letter of Intent.
