Mary King

Mary King is an Emmy Award winning journalist who joined the WBTV News team in August of 2019 as an Alert Center anchor on WBTV News This Morning and a reporter covering the South Carolina bureau. Mary came to WBTV from its sister station WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina where she was the morning anchor and a reporter at the station for more than seven years.

During her time at WIS, Mary helped lead the WIS Sunrise team to four Southeast Regional Emmy Awards for Best Morning Newscast, including two Emmys in that same category in 2017. Mary has also received multiple Emmy nominations for her reporting, including her live field coverage of South Carolina’s historic flooding in October of 2015.

In addition to the 1,000 year-flood, Mary has anchored continuous coverage of several major stories including the deadly attack on nine parishioners at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston and the removal of the Confederate flag from SC State House grounds.

Before she was in Columbia, Mary was the morning anchor and a reporter for WHAG-TV in Hagerstown, Maryland. She received an Edward R. Murrow Award for her reporting in that region. Prior to that, Mary affirmed her passion for journalism when she interned at the FOX News Network and MLB.com in New York City, as well as WCCB-TV in Charlotte.

Mary’s passion for news is fueled by her love for people and the community. She’s been involved on the board of several non-profits, including those that strive to bring awareness to homelessness, pediatric cancer and children with special needs. During her time at WIS and inspired by a young girl who courageously fought cancer, Mary organized a station effort to raise awareness for the need for bone marrow donations through the Be The Match National Marrow Donor Program. The effort helped register hundreds of potential donors and was honored at the SC Broadcast Service Project of the Year in 2018. Mary has regularly served as an emcee for numerous community events including the lighting of South Carolina’s State Christmas tree at the Governor’s Carolighting, the SC State Highway Patrol DUI Law Enforcement Awards, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Light the Night Walk.

Mary graduated Summa Cum Laude with her Bachelor's Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Troy University in Troy, Alabama. She also received her Master's Degree in Strategic Communications from TROY while working full-time. Mary received several awards for her reporting at TROY and was named the College of Communication and Fine Arts Outstanding Senior and Phi Kappa Phi's Outstanding Junior.

Mary is married to her best friend, Curtis and they welcomed their first child, Jaxon, in the summer of 2018. Mary, Curtis and Jaxon are actively involved at Transformation Church in Lancaster County and have a terrier-mix rescue named Mickey. Mary is extremely grateful for such a supportive family, including her parents, who have always encouraged her to follow her dreams. She loves to dance, loves to laugh and thanks God for her blessings she considers too numerous to count. If you have a story idea, send her an email at mking@wbtv.com.
