Police: Man tells N.C. officers he crashed into utility pole evading gunfire
LAURINBURG, N.C. (WMBF) - Police in North Carolina are investigating after a man claimed he crashed into a utility police while avoiding gunfire.
The Laurinburg Police Department responded around 1:40 a.m. Sunday to Chestnut Street for shots fired.
At the scene, officers found a Chevrolet Malibu that had overturned after crashing into a utility pole.
Police said witnesses told them that the Chevrolet hit two unoccupied cars before hitting the pole.
Officers investigated and found several spent casings on the street but determined that “no person or property had been struck by gunfire.”
After clearing the scene, investigators spoke with the driver of the Chevrolet, who claimed he was being shot at and trying to get away.
Police said the driver did not provide any more details.
The investigation is ongoing.
