‘It needed to be done’: Crews tear down parts of old Loris High School

LORIS, S.C. (WMBF) - A long-standing eyesore in northern Horry County is starting to come down.

WMBF News watched bulldozers tear down parts of the old Loris High School on Wednesday.

This comes as the state has given a total of $2 million to the City of Loris for it to buy the property and give it a much-needed facelift.

While the city’s plans for the property are still unclear, Councilmember Andrea Coleman said the demolishing of the old high school will keep the community safer. She also added the city is looking toward the future.

Meanwhile, for Betty Carter, she called the demolition bittersweet. Carter and her husband graduated from the old high school and live across the road from it.

“A lot of precious memories over here. I went to school here. In 1960 I graduated,” said Carter. “I’ve had a lot of experiences over there.”

For years Carter has watched the vacant high school rot away, but despite the memories she holds, Carter said that it was time to tear down the vacant school.

“I hate to see it go down but, I don’t like it, like it is,” said Carter.

On Wednesday Carter watched from her porch as part of the buildings were torn down.

“It’s real exciting to see what’s going on. I can’t get anything done at the house for coming out here looking at what’s going on,” said Carter.

It’s still unclear what the property will be transformed into, but Carter has a few ideas.

“I’d love to see something for special needs and you know for the children in the area because we don’t really have anything right here in town,” said Carter.

In the meantime, the cleanup is giving many hope for what’s to come.
