Warrants: Man charged with DUI after 2 killed in Myrtle Beach crash
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - A man is facing charges linked to a crash that killed two people earlier this summer in Myrtle Beach.
Records show 31-year-old Gabriel Hernandez Mejia was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of driving under the influence resulting in death.
Warrants obtained by WMBF News state Mejia’s charges stem from a June 9 crash in the area of Highway 501 and Seaboard Street. Those documents also say Mejia allegedly ran a red light and was speeding when his GMC Sierra collided with another vehicle.
Documents go on to state the driver and a backseat passenger of the other vehicle died as a result of the wreck.
Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard later identified the victims as 27-year-old Thanh Nguyen and 37-year-old Ha Quang. Willard said Nguyen died at the scene at the time of the crash, while Quang died at a hospital on June 22. She added that both victims also lived in Myrtle Beach.
Mejia allegedly had a blood alcohol level of .11 at the time of the crash, according to his arrest warrants.
As of Wednesday, records show Mejia is being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a $2 million bond.
