Mayor: Police not called about reported Surfside Beach shooting until day after
SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - Police in Surfside Beach are investigating after a reported shooting inside a home earlier this week.
Town officials said Thursday that police were at the scene on the 600 block of Hollywood Drive South. No injuries were reported.
Neighbors in the area told WMBF News they were shocked to see police in their usually quiet neighborhood.
Bill Caugherty has lived just a block away from where police said the shooting happened.
“I walk past here every morning on my daily walk. I was absolutely shocked that someone would be so crass and uncaring of other people that they would do something like this,” he said.
On Friday, Surfside Beach Mayor Robert Krouse said in a Facebook post that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident. However, he also said police found that residents heard shots “but no one called until bullet holes were found the next day.”
In his post, Krouse also said “If you see something or hear something, then say something—help your local law enforcement officers by notifying them.”
Tom Evanik said although he’s shaken up, he doesn’t feel unsafe in his neighborhood.
“I think it was, there might have been something going. It’s a personal thing, nobody just goes around shooting at people’s houses for no reason,” Evanik said.
Interim Police Chief Ken Davis told WMBF News on Thursday that officers collected evidence in the roadway. WMBF News also requested a copy of a police report related to the incident.
