‘Enough is enough’: 15-year-old N.C. boy dies in accidental shooting
FAIRMONT, N.C. (WMBF) – The Fairmont police chief had a solemn message for the community after a 15-year-old died in an accidental shooting.
Police were called just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday to a home on McDaniel Street for reports of a shooting victim.
When they arrived they found a 15-year-old died from a gunshot wound.
The investigation found that the teen was handling the gun when it went off.
“This loss for the Fairmont community is a tragic reminder of what can happen when firearms are in the hands of children,” Chief Jon Edwards said in a post. “We as parents and as a community need to step up at this time and say enough is enough. Get involved in not just your kids lives, but your kids friends live, know what they are doing, don’t be scared to ask questions, search their belongings, and help be the change, be the example that helps save our youth. The child you save might just be your own.”
The chief added that the department’s thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends who have been impacted by the shooting.
The Public Schools of Robeson County confirmed that the teen went to Fairmont High School.
“We ask the community to join us in prayer for the family of the 15-year-old Fairmont High School student who passed away recently. We are deeply saddened for the family,” the school district said in an email.
The school district also asked people to support the students and staff members of the school as well as they navigate through this difficult time.
