GREENVILLE, S.C. (WYFF) - A Greenville County teacher was killed Sunday near the Swamp Rabbit Trail in Greenville after she was hit by a car that took off, according to the coroner.

The coroner’s office was called to Sulphur Springs Road, around 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

A bicyclist was stopped westbound at a crosswalk, and an unknown vehicle was traveling north on Sulphur Spring Road, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The bicyclist entered the crosswalk and was hit by the vehicle, troopers said.

The vehicle left the scene and has not been found.

The bicyclist has been identified as Carli Brewer Soukup, 33, of Taylors, according to the coroner.

Soukup was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene.

She taught fifth grade at Mitchell Road Elementary.

A GCS Care Team of grief counselors will be at the school Monday to offer support to staff.
