GREENWOOD, S.C. (WYFF) - An Upstate man faces charges in the death of his baby girl, the Greenwood Police Department said Wednesday.

Zy’twan Childs, 21, of Greenwood, was charged with homicide by child abuse and possession of a schedule 2 controlled substance, police posted on the department’s Facebook page.

Police said they responded to the Emergency Care Center at Self Regional Healthcare on April 28 after a call about a suspicious death of an 18-month-old child.

Police said Childs had apparently been sleeping in a bed with the baby next to him. When he woke up, the child was not breathing or conscious, they said.

The medical staff at the hospital attempted to revive the baby but were unable to save her, police said.

During the investigation, detectives found about 50 “blue pills” on a nightstand in the bedroom where the father had been sleeping with the child.

The pills tested positive for Fentanyl, according to police.

The child’s cause of death was a lethal dose of fentanyl in her system, police said.
