Coroner identifies Florence shooting victim; suspect arrested in N.C.

FLORENCE, S.C. (WMBF) – In just a matter of hours, authorities were able to track down a murder suspect in North Carolina.

Police were called Wednesday morning to the 400 block of West Cheves Street where a victim was shot and killed.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken identified the victim as 46-year-old Valerie Baccus of Florence. Her body will be autopsied at the Medical University of South Carolina on Sunday.

Investigators said around 1 p.m. they developed information that the suspect was in North Carolina.

Multiple law enforcement agencies in South and North Carolina worked together to apprehend the suspect.

They said they found him just before 4:30 p.m. in an Econo Lodge in Sanford, North Carolina.

The suspect’s name and charges have not been released yet.

The Florence Police Department said more information will become available as the investigation continues.
