FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – Florence School District One will expand in 2022.

According to a letter from South Carolina State Superintendent Molly Spearman, Florence School District Four will be consolidated with FSD1 effective July 1, 2022.

At the same time as the consolidation, the Timmonsville High School would be retired and students of the school would attend appropriate high schools within FSD1, Spearman stated. She added the building would continued to be used for the middle and elementary schools, and possibly for other community needs in the future.

In May 2018, the state superintendent declared a state of emergency in Florence School District Four because of its “chronic financial instability.”

“Although there have been positive changes, I feel a tremendous responsibility to set a course of action that will provide stronger educational opportunities for all students in the Florence School District Four for years to come,” Spearman’s letter stated. “It is extremely difficult for districts smaller than 1,000 students to successfully operate financially and programmatically.”

Spearman said a transition committee representing both Florence Four and Florence One will be appointed immediately in consultation with the local legislative delegation.
