Coroner: Fifth person dies after car crashes into pond in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – A fifth person has died after a car crashed into a pond last weekend in Myrtle Beach, according to officials.

Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard identified the victim as 19-year-old Jamar Matthews from Lake City. Willard said Matthews died at Grand Strand Medical Center from injuries he sustained in the crash.

Authorities said the wreck happened around 1:30 a.m. Jan. 23 on Harrelson Boulevard, just west of Highway 15.

Officers received a call of a single-vehicle crash and found a vehicle partially submerged in a retention pond upon arriving at the scene.

Police said several people were found near the vehicle with severe injuries, while some did not survive.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden later identified four of the victims who died in the crash, including 20-year-old Shiquan Graham and 23-year-old Thomas McDowell, both of Lake City.

Additionally, 22-year-old Niterria Johnson and 17-year-old and LeAna McMillian, both of Winston-Salem, N.C., were also killed in the crash.
