FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – A joint effort by multiple agencies helped to take five suspects off the streets in connection to several shootings in the Lake City area.
The Lake City Police Department, Florence County Sheriff’s Office and Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office held a news conference on a series of shooting that took place Sunday night and early Monday morning.
Lake City officers were first called around 9:30 p.m. to a shots fired call on McGregor Circle. Police responded and found several gunshot casings.
Lake City interim Police Chief Daniel Brown said right after officers cleared the area there were more shots fired. Brown said they found a person who was grazed by a bullet and he was taken to a local hospital. The interim chief added that the gunshot victim was able to give a description of the vehicle but not the person who fired the shot.
Brown stated that an hour later, shots were fired into a home on Airport Circle. In that shooting, officers found another person who had been shot. The person was taken to the hospital and they’re expected to be OK.
Responding officers heard the gunshots and saw a vehicle leaving at a high-rate of speed, and that’s when a chase started, according to Brown.
The pursuit went into Williamsburg County. At one point, the vehicle stopped the suspects got out of the vehicle and ran.
Brown said authorities were able to take a couple of suspects into custody and also retrieved some weapons and drugs during the investigation.
Brown announced that Dawson Black, Carlos Burroughs, Malike Fulton, Lindon Harrison and Damarion Johnson were all arrested in connection to the case.
The interim police chief had a message to sent to those in the city who are looking to start trouble.
“We will not tolerate any nonsense. Our citizens will be protected. We will make sure we’re round the clock. We’ll make sure we’re keeping our residents safe. Just sending a notification to gentlemen, that if you think you’re going to get away, you’re not,” Brown said.
Florence County Sheriff TJ Joye and Williamsburg County Sheriff Stephen Gardner added to Brown statement, saying there is zero tolerance and they are working together as a team to curb the violence in the area.
Lake City Administrator Stephany Snowden added that as police and deputies work hard to keep the city safe, it’s also a community issue.
“We need our churches, we need our schools, but more importantly, we need our parents in the homes. You know when your children are not doing right, and you can’t look the other way because you love them. Because living this kind of lifestyle, you’re either going to end up in prison or in jail. And so I’m appealing, this is not just happening in Lake City, Florence County or Williamsburg County, this is a crisis nationwide where parents don’t know where their children are. How come you don’t know where your 15-year-old is at 2, 3 o’clock in the morning? That’s not a police issue. That’s a parenting issue,” Snowden said.
The investigation into the shootings is still ongoing.
