NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – The city of North Myrtle Beach has approved a pay increase for its lifeguards.

According to information from North Myrtle Beach Ocean Rescue, ocean lifeguards will now be paid between $14 and $16 an hour, while supervisors will make $17 an hour.

Rookies will receive a $800 bonus and returning lifeguards will get a $500 bonus, city officials said. That’s in addition to two $100 holiday bonuses, as well as free training and free uniforms.

Candidates must be able to swim 550 yards in 10 minutes or less, according to the city’s ocean rescue department.
