MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - Work is underway on a new theater in downtown Myrtle Beach.
The work began on Monday, and then on Tuesday construction crews worked on removing the façade from the building which will soon become the Broadway Theater.
The Broadway Theater will be a collaboration between the city and Coastal Carolina University.
It’s part of the Arts and Innovation District, which is an area city leaders hope to revitalize and increase foot traffic in.
Lauren Clever with the Downtown Development Office says the theater will add something Myrtle Beach is missing.
“I think it’s going to provide just another element that elevates Myrtle Beach,” Clever said. “We’ve always talked about that there was a lack of culture and arts within – in and around Myrtle Beach. This is going to add that layer into what Myrtle Beach can be.”
The theater is expected to open in 2022 as of right now.
Clever said that is a situation that would happen “in a perfect world.”
