COASTAL GAMEDAY: No. 15 Chanticleers take down App State
CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF) - The battle for the Sun Belt Conference’s East Division is set to kick off in Conway.
No. 15 Coastal Carolina hosts Appalachian State at noon Saturday, with both teams unbeaten in conference play.
The Chants are 0-6 against the Mountaineers all-time.
The broadcast of Saturday’s game was moved to ESPN after No. 4 Clemson’s game at Florida State was postponed.

Appalachian State wins the toss and will receive, Chanticleers will get the ball to start the second half.
The Mountaineers are in business early after a big, 50-yard run by Camerun Peoples to get inside the Coastal red zone.
Teddy Gallagher was briefly down for the Chanticleers. He’s been taken to the injury tent on the sideline.
A potential fumble by Peoples recovered by CCU is overturned. Peoples then punches it in for the game’s first points.
Appalachian State 7, Coastal Carolina 0 - 11:40, Q1
The Chanticleers are quick to respond. Grayson McCall finds Isaiah Likely on a 75-yard strike on the offense’s first play of the game. The extra point try is no good, so CCU still trails.
Appalachian State 7, Coastal Carolina 6 - 11:29, Q1
App State gets the ball back and avoids a turnover before electing to punt. Coastal Carolina takes over at their own 36.
The Chants then go three-and-out. The Mountaineers take over at their own 34-yard line after a punt.
App State is able to get into Coastal territory but settles for a field goal attempt. The 50-yard attempt from Chandler Staton is short, and Manny Stokes returns to near midfield where the Chants take over to end the quarter.
Appalachian State 7, Coastal Carolina 6 - END OF THE FIRST QUARTER
McCall connects with Likely again, this time on a 31-yard completion that puts Coastal inside Mountaineers’ territory early in the quarter.
Chanticleers can’t find a touchdown after a few plays, but Massimo Biscardi hits a 51-yard field goal to give the team their first lead of the game.
Coastal Carolina 9, Appalachian State 7- 10:50, Q2
Mountaineers appear to be back in business. Three-straight runs for a least 10 yards for Peoples puts App State back into Coastal territory.
App State manages to drive deeper, but CJ Brewer and Jeffery Gunter sack Zac Thomas on a third-down to force a field goal. Staton nails a 44-yard kick and the Mountaineers regain the lead.

McCall rolls out on a third-down and fires a pass near the sideline to Sam Denmark that’s originally ruled incomplete, but later reversed after a review. Chants trying to move just before halftime.
McCall’s helmet comes off during a run play, so backup quarterback Fred Payton comes in on a third down and converts on the ground for Coastal. The Chants are forced to punt after McCall is sacked on a third-down from the App State 42. Mountaineers will take over from their own 15.
The Mountaineers begin moving quickly near the end of the half, getting near Coastal territory with a 16-yard connection to Christian Wells.
App State gets to the CCU 39, but Tarron Jackson is called for offsides. Thomas finds Peoples on a short pass after the penalty that gets to the CCU 25 before the Mountaineers use their final timeout of the half.
Thomas finds Wells again, this time in the end zone on a 25-yard touchdown play. Staton’s extra point is good to put the Mountaineers up by eight just before halftime.

CCU hands the ball off to CJ Marable to end the half. It’s the first time the team has trailed at halftime so far this season.

At the half, McCall is 5-for-8 passing with 119 yards and the touchdown to Likely, who leads the team with 106 yards on two receptions so far.
For App State, Peoples has already rushed for 171 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. Thomas is also 9-for-12 passing with 94 yards and his touchdown late in the half. The Mountaineers have also controlled the clock, keeping the ball for just over 19 minutes, compared to nearly 11 for Coastal.
Coastal gets the ball back to start the second half, as McCall swings a short pass out to Marable for a 2-yard loss.
App State’s Demetrius Taylor is drawn offsides on a third down for Coastal. McCalls tucks it for a 62-yard touchdown run on the very next play to put the Chants back within two. It’s McCall’s fifth rushing touchdown of the season.
The Chants attempt a two-point conversion but come up short.
Appalachian State 17, Coastal Carolina 15 - 14:11, 3Q
After stalling on a pair of plays, Thomas airs it out deep to Williams on a 62-yard play to put the Mountaineers back in the CCU red zone.
Coastal forces another App State field goal attempt, as Staton hits a 36-yarder to extend the Mountaineers’ lead again.
Appalachian State 20, Coastal Carolina 15 - 10:55, 3Q
Coastal Carolina takes back over from their own 35 after the kickoff goes out of bounds. The Chants find themselves back in App State territory after a third-down completion from McCall to Likely for a first down.
On the next play, McCall fires deep down the field again for Likely and it’s incomplete, but a pass interference penalty for Shemar Jean-Charles puts the Chanticleers at the App State 26 for a fresh set of downs.
Marable then gets CCU within the red zone on a 14-yard run for his longest run of the day so far. After a loss of seven, McCall lobs a pass to Marable, who runs into the end zone.
CCU goes for two again and comes up short after the 19-yard score.
Coastal Carolina 21, Appalachian State 20 - 6:21, 3Q
App State gets the ball at their own 31 and moves up the field before Thomas is picked off by CCU’s D’Jordan Strong. It’s Strong’s fourth interception of the year. The play stands after a review.
The Chants then go three-and-out on the next possession and are forced to punt. App State will take over from the 20 after the punt rolls into the end zone.
Coastal Carolina 21, Appalachian State 20 - END OF THE THIRD QUARTER
App State drives back into Coastal territory after starting the quarter at midfield. Nate Noel catches a pass from Thomas and runs for nine yards each on back-to-back plays as the Mountaineers are back on the move.
Coastal’s defense is able to come up big again, stuffing People on a third down at the CCU 25. Staton lines up again for a field goal and hits it from 45 yards as the Mountaineers take back the lead.
Appalachian State 23, Coastal Carolina 21- 11:47, 4Q
CCU responding quickly after that score. Marable takes a 48-yard run all the way to the App State 36 on a second-and-long, followed by a McCall pass to Denmark to move the Chants closer.
McCall finds Jaivon Heiligh for his second catch of the game on a 22-yard play to put CCU at the App State 6-yard line. McCall then carries the ball near the end zone, but fumbles and it’s recovered by App State. The play is being reviewed to see if the ball crossed the pylon. The play stands after review, and App State takes over at their own 20.
Coastal Carolina comes up with another interception, this time it’s Alex Spillum coming up with a pick on Thomas as the Chants take over at the App State 49. CCU begins moving with a 15-yard pass from McCall to Kameron Brown, followed by a run by Reese White to convert a third-and-10.
The Chants kept moving on the ground, but head coach Jamey Chadwell called a timeout on a third-and-one with just under four minutes to play. McCall then takes it himself for the first down, pushing the Chants inside the App State 15.
CCU moves a little closer with some help from a facemask penalty on App State’s Brendan Harrington during a run by Marable. Mountaineers call a timeout with CCU now at the App State 3.
Out of the timeout, Coastal hands the ball off to White and he spins himself into the endzone for his first touchdown of the day. Chanticleers go for two again, but McCall is taken down in the backfield.
Coastal Carolina 27, Appalachian State 23- 2:24, 4Q
App State takes over from their own 19 after a mix-up on the kickoff. A false start penalty backed up the Mountaineers to their own 17, but the CCU defense comes up big for the team again. Thomas is taken down on a third-and-12, and the Mountaineers face a fourth-and-22 from their own 12.
Thomas tries to go deep on fourth down and is picked off again by D’Jordan Strong for the second time today, this one being taken back for at touchdown. The PAT puts Coastal Carolina up 11 with less than 90 seconds to play.
Coastal Carolina 34, Appalachian State 23- 1:20, 4Q
App State takes over at their own 34 after the kickoff. The Mountaineers move slightly upfield, but end up not converting on a fourth down.
