MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The South Carolina High School League on Wednesday outlined a plan for spring sports to return across the state, which includes baseball and softball.
The league’s executive committee passed a proposal that would have all sports begin practice on Feb. 1. Sports such as lacrosse, soccer, boys tennis, boys golf as well as track and field would also be allowed to hold scrimmages on Feb. 8.
Baseball and softball would be allowed to hold scrimmages starting Feb. 22. The league said the extra time will allow players to progress throwing programs that promote safety before the season starts.
The start of the baseball and softball season will also begin on March 15, whereas other sports will start earlier. Under the current plan, lacrosse seasons will begin Feb. 22 while soccer starts March 1. Track and field, boys golf and boys tennis teams will all be allowed to begin their regular seasons on March 8.
Baseball and softball will also have an eight-week regular season, with a 16-team playoff in each classification beginning May 15. The state finals for baseball and softball will be played on June 1-5 under the plan.
Soccer and boys tennis will also follow the same 16-team playoff format.
For all sports, the league also recommends a minimum of two days between games for the regular season along with a list of other safety guidelines.
Schedules for teams below at the sub-varsity and middle school levels will also follow the same dates as the high school calendar, according to officials.
The league also added that the schedule may be modified again to accommodate for a winter sport, or due to unforeseen circumstances caused by COVID-19.
