Robeson County inmate dies after testing positive for COVID-19, officials say

ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WMBF) - An inmate at a Pee Dee detention center has died after testing positive for the coronavirus, according to authorities.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said a 27-year-old inmate died Wednesday after testing positive over the weekend. The inmate tested positive on Nov. 14, and their condition worsened after being taken to the hospital.

Authorities said the detention center has had ten additional inmates test positive for the virus this year but does not currently have inmates who have tested positive.

The detention center also follows a policy where new inmates or inmates who test positive are quarantined for 14 days. The sheriff’s office added the detention center will conduct mass testing for inmates this week.
