CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF) - Coastal Carolina head coach Jamey Chadwell’s name has come up in regards to the opening at South Carolina and for good reason.
He’s been known to turn programs around during his coaching career. At his first stop as a head coach at North Greenville, Chadwell went 2-8 in his first season before going a combined 20-6 over the following two seasons.
Before coming to Conway, Chadwell spent four seasons at the helm of the Charleston Southern football program. Two seasons prior to his arrival, the Buccaneers were winless. He went 10-3 in his first season and left Charleston with a 35-14 record.
In his second full season at the helm at Coastal, Chadwell has the Chants playing their best ball since joining the FBS. The Chants are 7-0 and ranked No. 15 in the AP Top 25 Poll. It’s the highest ranking a Sun Belt school has ever had.
Chadwell addressed the rumors during his weekly press conference on Wednesday and said they are exactly that. His main focus is on this weekend’s showdown with defending conference champion Appalachian State.
“Any time you speak on a rumor, obviously they’re rumors for a reason because there’s not really much truth to them,” CCU head coach Jamey Chadwell said. “I think any time that happens that’s more just a compliment to your players and the coaches and the things they’ve been able to accomplish. I told the team that the other day, these are rumors and if there is something true with it I’ll tell you. It’s more them and the way they’re playing. We’re more focused on our team and hopefully trying to play our best this weekend and the next weeks we have after that.”
A Coastal Carolina player echoed the same sentiments Wednesday saying the Chants have bigger issues at hand.
“We couldn’t care less about what’s going on in Columbia,” CCU linebacker Teddy Gallagher said. “Coach Chadwell is here, coach Chadwell is our guy and we don’t really care about that at all.”
