GREENSBORO, N.C. (WYFF) - A North Carolina family is celebrating: 6-year-old Eli Dildy is done with chemotherapy.

“He knows that this parade is for him today,” said his mom, Laura Dildy. “Eli has one of the biggest hearts that I know of. He is a sweet child. He has always been sweet-natured and concerned about others. He’s just full of energy.”

Doctors diagnosed Eli with leukemia shortly after his third birthday. He is now 6.

“There are just incredible doctors at Brenner Children’s Hospital,” said Matt Dildy, Eli’s dad. “We’ve been so fortunate. We never once felt like just a patient. They became family and they would take all the time in the world to answer all of the questions we had.”

On Friday afternoon, friends, family and neighbors loaded into decorated cars for a celebratory drive around the neighborhood and a stop by the elementary school.

“He’s excited. For a child, it’s kind of hard to understand everything he’s been through, but we think he gets it,” Dildy said.

The family thanked the community for the years of support and the team at Brenner for taking care of their son.
