Around 500 Horry County families benefit from Friday food drive

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) - About 500 families no longer need to worry about where their next meal is coming from thanks to a food distribution event held Friday.

United Way of Horry County handed out food boxes at Socastee Elementary School. Through donations from Lowcountry Food Bank, they were able to feed about 2,500 people.

While the food comes from the Lowcountry Food Bank, volunteers from Faith Outreach Ministries and Beach Church make sure the food gets in the hands of those who may otherwise go without.

“We’ve been part of the disaster relief for years now. There’s people that are really struggling right now. There’s so many businesses right now, especially in our area, that are only running at 50% of employees. Those employees don’t collect unemployment so their families are hurting. So we need to be there for those people,” said Larry Nowak, vice president of Faith Outreach Ministries.

United Way is hosting two more food distribution events next weekend. Information can be found below:

  • Saturday, July 18, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.: The Shepherd’s Table, 1412 Gamecock Avenue #A Conway, S.C. 29526
  • Saturday, July 18, from 9:30 to 11 a.m.: The Church of the Resurrection, 8901 U.S. 17 Bypass South, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29575
